Contaminated Site Management

Participants will learn about the Phased approach to contaminated site management including Phase I to III environmental site assessment (ESA), risk assessment, site remediation, site monitoring and the regulatory site closure process. The course will include a detailed review of methods used to conduct Phased ESAs, risk assessment, remediation, monitoring and the regulatory site closure process in Atlantic Canada.

Robert Turner, M.A.Sc., P.Geo.
Mr. Turner is a graduate of Acadia University (Geology) and has his masters of applied science degree from the Technical University of Nova Scotia (now Dalhousie). Rob is an Associate and project manager with Conestoga-Rovers & Associates. He has over 20 years of experience in the environmental and earth sciences with a strong background in Quaternary geology and geochemistry. Rob has worked on and/or managed over 400 environmental projects throughout the Atlantic Provinces. The work has been completed at a variety of sites including: bulk petroleum plants, gasoline stations, CN rail yards, Department of Fisheries and Oceans light stations and wharf facilities, Agriculture Canada research stations, military bases, RCMP headquarters, airports, and orphan sites. The work completed at these sites has involved Phase I-IV ESAs, risk assessment, remedial design, implementation and monitoring programs (for a variety of contaminants such as hydrocarbons, metals, pesticides and PAHs) as well as hazardous building materials assessments.

Christine Plourde, B. SC. ENG., P.Eng.
Ms. Plourde is a graduate of the University of New Brunswick (Civil Engineering) and is a project manager and risk assessor with Conestoga-Rovers & Associates. Christine has more than 19 years of diverse experience in areas such as project management, human health risk assessments, environmental audits, multi-phase environmental site assessments, soil vapour assessments, remediation, and regulatory closure of contaminated sites. She has conducted and managed numerous municipal engineering, geotechnical/materials investigations, construction inspections, hazardous materials surveys, and storm water management plans. Over the past five years she has specialized in quantitative human health risk assessments for contaminants such as petroleum hydrocarbons, metals, PAHs, PCBs and VOCs for various private and federal and provincial government clients, in accordance with Atlantic PIRI, CCME and Health Canada protocols. Christine is a registered professional engineer in the provinces of New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island. She Chairs the Engineers and Geoscientists New Brunswick Professional Development Committee and is a member and Past Chair of the Admissions Committee. She is also Engineers and Geoscientists New Brunswick’s representative and current Chair of the Engineers Canada Women in Engineering Advisory Group and a member of the Engineers Canada Women in Engineering Task Force.
