Italy: Course

HIST 3810 |
The Second World War in Italy |
This team-taught course explores the bitter struggle waged on the Italian peninsula by the Allies and anti-fascist Italians against the Nazi-Fascist coalition from 1943-1945. The course is taught on location throughout Italy and centers on visiting historic sites, monuments and battlefields. Lasting reminders of Italy’s brutal, but little-known, civil war are evident throughout its cities and countryside. In addition, Italy's unique geography made Second World War battles there especially difficult. Thus, the wartime legacy and Italian terrain provide students with an ideal classroom and subject for studying the war in Italy. Although the course addresses the war in Italy as a whole, special attention is paid to the highly successful, yet little-known, Canadian contribution to the campaign in the battles for Ortona, the Liri Valley and the Gothic Line.
