Option A: designed for students interested in an introduction to archaeology:
ANTH 1300 Archaeology Summer Program 6ch
This course offers an overview to the hands-on components of archaeology by providing students with an introduction to experimental archaeology, human material culture, and the archaeological record, and basic archaeological recovery methods. These will be presented in two broad components, one focused on creating and using ancient tools and technology, and exploring past lifeways, and one focused on excavating these with formal archaeological techniques. Prerequisites: None.
OR
Option B: open to upper level students who have the appropriate prerequisite courses.
ANTH 3344 and 3346 are taken consecutively.
ANTH 3344 Ancient Technology 3ch
This course explores ancient technologies from the view of experimental archaeology and replication of specific tools. Various materials, such as stone, clay, metal and cloth are examined, and particular tool classes, such as weapons, containers, and transport vessels are considered.

ANTH 3346 Public Archaeology 3ch
This course offers an introduction to public and community-based archaeology and provides an overview of archaeology as public outreach. Topics include public engagement and education, the role of museums, universities, and field projects, and the ethical issues around public education focused on excavation. Students will participate in the development and implementation of a public archaeology project, including creating a display or showcase on archaeological practices. The course will also involve interacting with the public, with other students, and with the university community, and will involve mentoring and teaching others about archaeological practice. Prerequisites: ANTH/ARCH 1303, ANTH/ANTH 2303 or permission of instructor.
