richard hornsbyRichard Hornsby                         Wind Ensemble

Richard Hornsby is an active performer, educator, arts administrator and arts advocate.  Professionally, he has performed with the Toronto Symphony, National Arts Centre Orchestra, Symphony Nova Scotia, and New Music Concerts of Canada as well as frequently recording for C.B.C. Radio of Canada. He continues performing as a recitalist, soloist and chamber musician.  Currently he is Director of Music at the University of New Brunswick in Fredericton. 



 

 


Julian Smerdon                         Symphonic Band

Julian has been teaching at UNB camp since its inception in 1993.  Since 2003, Julian has taught at The York School in downtown Toronto.  His bands and small ensembles have performed at the Kiwanis Music Festival and Music Fest.  This past year, his Flute Choir performed at a TEDx conference at the Science Centre in Toronto.  They have also performed at the OMEA (Ontario Music Educators’ Association Conference).  Julian has organized and taken trips for Concert Band, Jazz Band and Choir to France, Austria, Czech Republic and Italy.  He has also organized a trip to London and Paris for York School students in February 2012.  As of September, Julian will be teaching at Trafalgar Castle School in Whitby, Ontario.  For the past two years, Julian has been studying band conducting with Dr. Gillian McKay at the University of Toronto.

david adamsDavid Adams             Chamber Orchestra

David Adams, a native of Winnipeg Manitoba, completed his Bachelor of Music in Performance at the University of Toronto and went on to pursue his career as a professional violinist. With many scholarships and first prizes to his credit, Adams has gained critical acclaim as a soloist, conductor, chamber and orchestral musician.

His current activities include artist in residence at the University of New
Brunswick Saint John, playing principal violin with the Saint John String Quartet and concert master for Symphony New Brunswick and Atlantic Sinfonia.

Along with his active performing schedule Adams teaches privately, performs
in school concerts, and coaches youth orchestras. David has received the New Brunswick Merit Award and in 2003 he received the Golden Jubilee Metal for his contribution to Music in New Brunswick.

alison royAlison Roy                                     Choir

Alison Roy is a professional musician living in Toronto.  She sings with The Elmer Iseler Singers, The Toronto Mendelssohn Choir, Choir 21, Metropolitan United Church Choir, The Matthew Larkin Singers and Beth Tzedec Synagogue Choir. As a Music Educator, she trains teachers in Grades K to 8 how to bring music to their classrooms and coaches them on conducting techniques. Alison also runs workshops for teachers on implementing musical literacy in the classroom through games and activities. She has conducted classroom choirs, the Amadeus Choir, church choirs, the Independent School Music Festival Choir and the choirs at the University of New Brunswick Summer Music Camp. 

 

 


bjorn runeforsBjorn Runefors                         Flute

The Swedish conductor, flutist and singer Björn Runefors relocated to New Brunswick in 2003. 

Björn is actively involved in the Fredericton music life as a teacher, singer, flutist and conductor. Björn is currently conducting the UNB Chorale and the UNB Concert Band. He teaches Music Theory at UNB, and gives private flute lessons. Björn is also the Music Director of the Fredericton Choral Society.  Björn is a multi-faceted musician. He has performed in professional orchestras and choirs both in Sweden and in Canada. He has written music for and performed as an actor at theatres in Sweden. 
As a teacher, Björn has been on faculty at music colleges in Sweden and in Stockholm he was the founder and director of a youth orchestra that toured extensively across Europe.

 

 


Peter Allen                                               Piano

peter allenConcert pianist Peter Allen has continually delighted audiences with his power, poetry, and engaging artistry. He has performed across Canada and is frequently broadcast over CBC Radio. Peter is a regular performer with the "Music on the Hill" Series at UNB, the Scotia Festival of Music, PEI Symphony, Symphony New Brunswick, Symphony Nova Scotia, and the St. Cecilia Concert Series. He is a very active composer and most recently premiered his Hurricane Juan Piano Concerto with Symphony N.S. which was commissioned and broadcast around the country by the CBC. He is Professor of Music at Dalhousie University where, beside his piano teaching duties, he teaches literature classes and conducts the Dal Symphony Orchestra in two concerts a year.

 

 


yvonne kershawYvonne Kershaw                         Oboe/Bassoon

American-born bassoonist Yvonne Kershaw has a wide range of performance experience in both Canada and the U.S. She played with the Cascade Symphony in Washington and has participated in the Sandpoint, Idaho, and Bayview, Michigan music festivals. Her extensive teaching experience includes instructing instrumental music in Seattle area music schools and working as a graduate instructor of bassoon at Indiana University. Yvonne now resides in Fredericton, where she adjudicates music festivals and teaches bassoon, flute and oboe at the UNB Centre for Musical Arts.  She teaches courses in music theory and music appreciation at UNB as well. She is a regular faculty member of UNB’s Summer music Camp. She performs regularly with Symphony New Brunswick.   

 


scott marshallScott Marshall                         Saxophone/Jazz Band

Calgary born and now Toronto- based saxophonist, composer, and arranger Scott Marshall is highly sought-after for his skills within the jazz community, film and television world.  Marshall has performed with a lengthy and diverse list of accomplished musicians including: Johnny Mathus, The Temptations, The Four Tops, Bobby Caldwell, Persian superstar Shadmehr Aghilli, Denzel Sinclaire, The Kitchener Waterloo Symphony Orchestra, Hot Toddy, Bill Stevenson, Lyne Tremblay, Out of Order, and the Juno-winning big-band NOJO, not to mention Wynton Marsalis stopping by to sit in with his quartet.

After completing his Masters Degree in Jazz Studies at the University of North Texas and moving to Toronto in 1999, Scott has been in high demand as an educator, working for the Toronto District School Board as well as teaching masterclasses for saxophone and improvisation. He is routinely hired for the Toronto School board's Music by the Lake, and the University of New Brunswick's Summer Music Camp.  


charles mckinnonCharles MacKinnon             Trumpet

Trumpeter Charles MacKinnon has performed throughout Canada and the United States with the National Ballet Orchestra, Canadian Opera Company Orchestra, the  Confederation Centre Orchestra, Charlottetown, and many touring shows.  Charles has also performed in Scotland with various orchestras in and around Edinburgh, including the Scottish Opera Company. He performs frequently with Symphony Nova Scotia and Nova Sinfonia.  Charles is in demand throughout Nova Scotia as a teacher, coach and brass clinician. 

 

 


olivia brayleyOlivia Brayley-Quackenbush            French Horn

Fredericton native, Olivia Brayley-Quackenbush, is a graduate of Acadia University with a Bachelor of Music in horn performance.  During this time, Olivia performed as a regular extra with Symphony Nova Scotia and performed many chamber and solo recitals.  Upon completion at Acadia, Olivia continued her studies at McGill University with Denys Derome and John Zirbel.    In 2007, Olivia held the horn position with Kvintten Nord, a fully professional brass quintet in Finland.  Ms. Brayley-Quackenbush currently resides in Toronto as a sought after teacher, clinician, and performer.  She is a member of the Toronto Brass Quintet.  Ms. Brayley-Quackenbush appeared as soloist with the York Symphony Orchestra in October 2011.

 

 


nadia francavillaNadia Francavilla                         Violin

Violinist Nadia Francavilla is an accomplished recitalist and chamber musician. She was a member of both Quatuor Arthur-LeBlanc and Quatuor Bozzini with which she made frequent tours in Canada, the United States and Europe.  A graduate of McGill University, she received solid musical training under the direction of Mauricio Fuks, Raphael Druian and Joseph Silverstein.  She is a member of Motion Ensemble and Moineaux d'Entendre where she explores new horizons in improvisation, electronics, aleatory music and multimedia. During the 2011-2012 season, Mrs. Francavilla will be Musician in Residence at the University of New Brunswick in Fredericton where she will perform recitals, give lectures and masterclasses and will also teach violin at the Université de Moncton.

Christopher Buckley grew up in Quispamsis and is presently a member of Saint John String Quartet, Symphony New Brunswick, Atlantic Sinfonia, a Musician-in-Residence at UNB Saint John and a member of the coaching faculty with New Brunswick Youth Orchestra. The Saint John String Quartet has 3 CD's with two nominations and one ECMA win. SJSQ has traveled to Japan and China. "We've been to Maine but not Mexico". Chris lives in Saint John with Elizabeth and their son, Seth.

 



Catherine Little                                                Cello

catherine littleNova Scotia cellist Catherine Little has a Masters in performance from the Université de Montréal and an Honours Bachelor of Music in performance from Wilfrid Laurier University. She also spent one year studying at the Conservatoire Nationale de Musique et de Danse on a cultural exchange in La Rochelle, France. Her important teachers and coaches include Norman Adams, Colin Matthews, Paul Pulford and the Penderecki String Quartet. Catherine has performed in orchestras, chamber music festivals and masterclasses, including Halifax ’s Scotia Festival of Music, the Domaine Forget Summer Music Academy , the Tuckamore music festival, the National Youth Orchestra of Canada, Montreal ’s Nouvelle Ensemble Moderne and last autumn with the Orquesta Sinfonica Nacional de Colombia, in Bogota . Catherine loves music from the classical genre, but has also “wet her feet” with rock, celtic, klezmer, new and baroque music as well as improvisation. She also has a passion for teaching piano and cello.

 


d'arcy greyD'Arcy Gray                                     Percussion

Canadian percussionist D'Arcy Philip Gray exploits his versatility to find himself in a great variety of performing situations.  In the past ten years, Gray has premiered well over 100 new works, mostly solo or chamber music by Canadian composers.  In addition, he participated in installations of Rainforest IV and the Collage Juke-Box project, both of which have been presented worldwide.  He has also given dozens of clinics on three continents on a variety of subjects.
 
Gray is a graduate of the Juilliard School and McGill University.  He has received grants from the Canada Council for the Arts, the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec, and the Getty Research Institute for the Arts and Humanities.  He is a Yamaha Clinician and a Sabian Artist.  His collection of studies, "7 Operations for Marimba" are published by Honeyrock in the U.S.  Gray presently lives in Halifax where he teaches at Dalhousie University.

 


stephen peacockSteven Peacock                         Guitar

Classical guitarist, composer and choral conductor Steven Peacock, based in Fredericton, NB, has performed as a soloist and accompanist in concert and recording engagements throughout Canada, and has just released, with flutist Sally Wright, "The Green Bushes: Dances, Airs & Lullabies" (Blue Milo, 2010). "The Calico Road," a varied collection of short works for solo guitar, appeared in 2007.   Keenly interested in ensemble work, he has performed extensively with Ms. Wright ("Cantilena: 20th-Century Works for Flute and Guitar" appeared in 2001) and, in the United Kingdom, flutist Jane Coulcher-Stoltenberg ("Encuentro," 2000); sopranos Paula Hébert, Angela Birdsell, and Wendy Nielsen; and guitarist Gerry Van Wart, with whom he released "Milonga" in 2003 and "El Elegante: Dances for Two Guitars" in 1997.  Mr. Peacock adjudicated at the 2003 National Festival of Music and currently teaches at the University of New Brunswick and at St. Thomas University.

 


andrew millerAndrew Miller                         Bass

Andrew Reed Miller has worked as a professional musician for over 25 years, playing in orchestras, opera and ballet companies and performing chamber music. In 1994 he began focusing on contemporary and experimental music, developing original compositions, audio installations and media art. He is founder and director of Motion Ensemble, which presents concerts in NB, has toured much of Canada.  Andrew is principal bass of Symphony NB, is a faculty member of NBYO/Sistema NB and teaches audio courses at the Centre for Arts and Technology in Fredericton.  He has been heard on numerous CBC broadcasts and has been invited as guest artist by the NB Summer Music Festival, the Scotia Festival of Music, Ensemble Kore (Montreal) and Earshot concerts (Toronto).
