Daytime Workshop - Fiction Writing 101 with Shandi Mitchell

This full-day course introduces the world of fiction writing. Participants will explore various approaches to developing character, setting, theme, point of view and structure to help reveal the voice that best serves the story. We will focus on the creative, the fear, the wildness, and the play of writing.

Be prepared to write.

Time: 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Location: Milham Room, Harriet Irving Library, UNB Campus

Course fee: $125.00 plus HST for adults

About the Instructor: Shandi Mitchell is an author and filmmaker. Her debut novel Under This Unbroken Sky was simultaneously published by Penguin Canada, Weidenfeld & Nicolson (UK) and Harper Collins (US). It sold in nine countries, including translation rights for Chinese, Hebrew, Dutch and Italian. The book garnered the 2010 Commonwealth Regional Prize for First Book, the Thomas Head Raddall Fiction Award, the 2012 Kobzar Literary Award, and was longlisted for the IMPAC Dublin Literary Award.

As a writer/director her award-winning short films have played at numerous festivals. Her feature film, The Disappeared, made its festival premiere at the Atlantic International Film Festival 2012 to sold out and encore screenings. The Disappeared recently completed a critically acclaimed Canadian festival run, garnering an ACTRA Outstanding performance award for actor Shawn Doyle, an ACTRA nomination for actor Gary Levert, two Canadian Screen Award nominations and a special jury prize at the Atlantic Film Festival. As social media tools sprout like spring daisies, we are challenged to optimize the accessibly priced, self-publishing opportunities now available to us. In this workshop, we will discuss what worked and what didn’t for Bobbie Ann Cole during the launch of her book, She Does Not Fear the Snow.

If you’re an already-published author, please come ready to share your own experiences. If you’ve not yet published, you’ll receive plenty of inspirational ideas.

About the Instructor: Bobbie Cole loves bringing old houses, paintings and books to life by weaving stories, fictional and non-fictional, around them. She has had a number of short stories published and has received grants and awards for her creative writing in her native U.K. Her full-length memoir, She Does Not Fear the Snow, was published in 2012.

Bobbie’s background is in journalism and business. She holds a post-graduate diploma in Creative Writing from University of London’s Goldsmiths College and a Certificate in Novel Writing from City University, London. She has also completed the mentoring program of the Humber School for Writers, Ontario.

This course introduces participants to the world of book and visual arts reviewing. Learn how to research and write reviews for books (fiction and non-fiction) and for museum and art gallery exhibitions. Learn about current markets and about how to pitch your reviews.

Time: 6:00 p.m.- 9:00 p.m.
Location: Room 261, Marshall D’Avary Hall, UNB Campus
Course fee: $65.00 plus HST for adults
$30.00 plus HST for students

About the Instructor: Laurie Glenn Norris is a regular contributor to Salon, the Telegraph-Journal’s arts and culture supplement, as a book reviewer. She has also written reviews and articles for Atlantic Books Today; ArtsEast; the Daily Gleaner, the Telegraph-Journal, N.B.: the Journal of the NB College of Craft and Design and MUSE.

She is the author of two books, both published by Nimbus Publishing, Halifax: Cumberland County Facts and Folklore (2009) and Haunted Girl: Esther Cox and the Great Amherst Mystery (2012).

Haunted Girl is currently shortlisted for the Atlantic Book Awards Democracy 250 Award for Historical Writing.

Laurie is currently working on an historical novel set in Nova Scotia.

She holds a B.A. from Saint Marys’ University; a B.Ed. from the University of Alberta, an Honors B.A. in art history from Mount Allison University and a M.A. in art history from the University of Victoria. Laurie is currently employed as a program assistant with the UNB College of Extended Learning.
