About the Instructor: Valerie Sherrard first decided to become an author when she was in grade six. Her homeroom teacher, Mr. Alf Lower, praised and encouraged her efforts and instilled in her a lifelong belief in her ability to write. Although nearly three decades went by before she began to pursue writing seriously, Valerie never forgot her teacher’s words. After years of producing books for teens, she expanded her work for other ages. Two thousand eight saw the release of her first junior novel, Tumbleweed Skies while There’s A COW Under My Bed! introduced the delightfully confused Oscar Ollie Brown in Valerie’s debut picture book.
Since becoming a published author, Valerie has enjoyed visiting many classrooms and libraries to speak to young people about writing, literacy, and most of all, finding and following your dreams.
Born in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, Valerie has lived in a number of provinces. She currently resides in Miramichi, New Brunswick with her husband Brent (who is also an author) and their four cats: Lilly, Thragg, Tootie-P and Cody.

Regardless of the writing task, the most important words are the first. Bright beginnings—outrageous, deeply serious, or both— arrest attention. They prompt readers and listeners to “buy in.” Planned topics include proven “winners,” purpose and focus questions; efficient, effective Internet research; and thoughtful control of language (diction, tone, and style). Practice time will be allotted according to the needs of the group.
Those who wish to hone their skills in either creative or business writing will find this workshop helpful and informative.
Time: 6:00 p.m.- 9:00 p.m.
