Life Writing is a deeply personal writing voyage in any case but even more so when the life being written about includes times of extreme life-and-death trauma as with Holocaust survivors. Carolyn Gammon, who has lived in Berlin, Germany since 1992, has spent many years working with survivors and recording their stories. Using first person and eye-witness interviews, archival research, on-site research and many more techniques Carolyn has authored two Holocaust biographical memoirs: Johanna Krause – Twice Persecuted – Surviving in Nazi Germany and Communist East Germany (Wilfrid Laurier University Press, 2007) and The Unwritten Diary of Israel Unger (Wilfrid Laurier University Press, 2013). In this workshop, Carolyn will talk and teach about Life Writing when memories are forged in trauma.

Using a mix of readings, reports on interview / research processes. photos, documents, talkstory, and film, participants will have a chance to learn how to approach their own Life Writing / Biography / Memoir projects.

Completing a manuscript is a huge accomplishment, but what then? Knowing whom to contact and how to present yourself and your work will go a long way toward having that novel, book of poetry, or work of non-fiction published.

With the guidance of Susanne Alexander, publisher at Goose Lane Editions, Canada’s oldest independent publisher and one of Canada’s most successful publishing companies, and Joe Blades writer, artist and publisher and founder of Broken Jaw Press, you will become familiar with the steps involved in the publishing process: what publishers look for and need to know, agents, contracts, edits, timelines, deadlines and life lines for new authors.

You’ll also have the opportunity to briefly pitch your idea for a book and receive honest advice about the prospects for publication.  Come prepared with a snappy synopsis of your work or your ideas!
