One Moment: An Homage to The Family of Man
(Edward Steichen’s 1955 Exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art, NY)
Please join the UNB Art Centre and the SilverFish Photography Collective as we open One Moment: An Homage to The Family of Man. This exciting exhibition features photographs from twelve talented photographers, partnered with quotes and inspirational messages recalling the everyday moments that make up our day-to-day lives.
Inspired by Tennessee Williams’ quote from The Milk Train Doesn’t Stop Here Anymore “Death is one moment, but life is so many of them”, curator Marie Maltais, director of the UNB Art Centre, has selected photographs that reflect themes such as birth and death, and the stages in between as seen through the lens of this local photographic group. From over 1000 images submitted for the show, this exhibition features more than 100 stunning black & white and colour photographs.
One Moment is inspired by Edward Steichen’s 1955 exhibition The Family of Man that was initially displayed at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City. On the 60th anniversary of Steichen’s exhibition, One Moment recalls the ambition and challenge of that initial show. The photographs included in the exhibition spoke to the similarities between people around the globe, and was an effort in cultural diplomacy and harmony in the decade following the Second World War. The Family of Man toured the world for eight years; making stops in 37 different countries and is now on permanent display in Clerveaux Castle in Luxembourg. In 2003, the Family of Man collection was added to UNESCO’s Memory of the World Register in recognition of its impact.
2015 is also the 15th anniversary of the SilverFish Photography Collective. SilverFish was founded in 2000 when a group of New Brunswick College of Craft and Design graduates sought a way to continue their creative pursuits. Since then, its membership has grown and its members work towards a an annual theme-based exhibit. This fifteenth anniversary show reflects a substantial amount of work from each of the twelve photographers in the collective. The SilverFish photographers in this exhibition are: Peter Bjerkelund, Rob Blanchard, Jeff Crawford, Mandy Wright, Oliver Flecknell, Burton Glendenning, Peter Gross, Mike Meade, Lori Quick, Denise Rowe, Karen Ruet, & Roger Smith.
One Moment will officially open on November 6, 2015 at 5:00PM at the UNB Art Centre in Memorial Hall (9 Bailey Drive) at the University of New Brunswick. The show will run from November 6 through December 18. A catalogue will be produced for this exhibition and will be available at the UNB Art Centre.
