An introduction to fundamentals of finance in new ventures
and/or high growth technology-driven businesses. Students will learn how
to interpret and analyse financial statements and develop pro-forma
financial statements. The course will enable students to enhance their
knowledge of sound principles of finance and alternative sources of
finance. They will learn about venture capital financing and initial
public offerings (IPO) and the role they play in financing high growth,
high tech businesses and finance negotiations.

The course features include lecture notes, downloadable
spreadsheets, testing over the web, a practical assignment, and a
written exam.

TME 3013 is one of the core courses in the Technology Management and Entrepreneurship Diploma Program.
The primary objective of the course is to introduce students to
financial planning and analysis concepts with emphasis on start-ups and
small businesses in the high tech sector of the economy. Through the use
of online content, assigned readings, review exercises and quizzes,
students will be exposed to the entire spectrum of corporate finance in
the entrepreneurial environment.
Another major objective of the course will be to improve the
skills of students in the analysis of complex business/management
situations and problems. Students will also learn how to use computer
spreadsheet software in financial analysis applications.

- When you complete this course you will be able to:
- identify the typical structure and content of financial
statements (income statement, balance sheet and statement of changes in
financial position)
- correctly apply commonly used financial terms
- analyze and interpret the financial condition and performance of a firm
- apply accounting principles/practices as they relate to financial statements
- identify key variables that affect the financial results of a business and the relationships between these variables
- apply appropriate methods to develop pro forma financial statements
- apply appropriate principles to guide the strategy for financing a business
- determine an appropriate mix of debt and equity for financing a business
- identify and implement strategies to manage the working capital of a business
- identify and select appropriate sources of finance to finance various types of assets owned by a business
- determine whether venture capital financing is appropriate for a business and whether a business would qualify
- tailor a business plan to address the requirements of the venture capital due diligence process
- assess the potential advantages and disadvantages of a typical venture capital partnership
- identify and evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of
various venture capital exit alternatives including an initial public
offering (IPO)
- effectively prepare for financing negotiations

Although there is not a textbook for this course, students
will be required to purchase associated readings from Harvard University
(approximately $45.00 US).

There will be a total of ten quizzes during the course (one for
each module), a proforma assignment, and a final exam at the end of the
course. The quizzes will be worth thirty percent of the final grade,
the assignment worth ten percent, and the final exam will be worth sixty
percent.
Each sixty minute quiz will consist of ten questions (True or
False and Multiple Choice) totalling ten points. The average of your
quiz results will be used to determine your final quiz grade.
The proforma assignment will be submitted directly via email to the course instructor.
The final examination will be invigilated and must be written no
later than six months from the effective commencement date, unless
application has been made, and approval granted, for an extension of
time.
