Course Description:

This course is intended to introduce the student to the myriad possibilities of Politics. It is aimed at exposing Political Science as a tool for analyzing the seamier side of the world that Philosophy, Sociology and Anthropology do not necessarily do as social sciences. It concentrates primarily on the actions of “STATES” but individuals and institutions play no less of a role in the nitty-gritty world of self-seeking politics.

Prerequisite:

No academic prerequisite. Access to a computer with a high-speed modem and internet connection will be required.

Course Features:

This course will explore several key areas of political science in both its past and present aspects. They include:

-The origin and evolution of the "Nation State".
-Western law; its relation to private property and the state.
-The Globalization of the economy and the State.
-An overview of Canadian politics.
-A section dealing with area studies, exploring dynamic regions like Palestine, Israel, and Yugoslavia
-A section involving International Relations which examines some common fault lines that separate cultures and nations such as ideology, religion, an nationalism.
-A section on gender issues covering the evolution of patriarchy, women in politics, and women on the internet.

The course is designed to make full use of the Internet as the basic engine for communications between instructor and student. Have a look at the first chapter at: POLS1000

Course Format:

There are seven sections to the course. Most content is on-line, however; students will be expected to purchase the required text in order to compose a book report on that reading.

Assignments & Examinations:

There are two (2) essays, an online quiz, a book report, and a written final exam.
