FOR 2286

Subject: GIS and Forestry
Course No. and Title: FOR 2286 - GIS in Forestry II
Credit Value: Two (2) credit hours
Course Description:

This course offers advanced study of ArcGIS, involving mainly raster data geoprocessing and the Spatial Analyst extension. Like it's predecessor courses, For 1285 and For 2285, the course emphasizes learning through hands-on exercises involving forestry data and application.

You'll finish the course able to tap the unique analytical possibilities that rasters and associated geoprocessing open up. And, you'll finish with advanced skill in spatial modelling of phenomena, like animal habitats and route locations, as well as automating complex geoprocessing tasks.

  • Among other things, using ArcGIS 10.x Spatial Analyst and ModelBuilder, you'll:
    • create a DEM (digital elevation model) and calculate slopes and aspects.
    • perform spatial analyses using "map algebra".
    • identify "least-cost" routes using cost accumulation surfaces.
    • create "viewsheds".
    • build models.
Prerequisite:

Familiar with coverages, shapefiles and the geodatabase, and skilled in ArcGIS 10.x (FOR 1285 or equivalent is required; FOR 2285 is desirable but not required).
