ENGL 2902

Subject: ENGLISH
Course No. and Title: ENGL 2902  Survey of English Literature from 1660-1900
Credit Value: Three (3) credit hours
Course Description:

A survey course which studies English literature from 1660-1900. ENGL 2902 introduces the student to the close examination of literary texts in various genres. Works are studied from three major literary periods, namely the 18th Century, the Romantic Period, and the Victorian Period.

Prerequisite:

Grade of C or better in ENGL 1000 or its equivalent (i.e., ENGL 1145 Introduction to Prose Narrative/1143 Introduction to the Novel). ENGL2902 is not available to students who have completed ENGL 2000 or 2900 or 2901 on the Fredericton campus.

The Department of English must give approval before registration can be finalized.

Course Instructor:

Dr. Roger Ploude, Department of English, University of New Brunswick

Course Features:

ENGL 2902 consists of 23 digital audio recordings which contain lectures specially prepared for this course, but which cover exactly the same ground as is dealt with in the course given on the campus. The recordings are enriched by a detailed study guide which, through notes and illustrations, brings the words of the texts to life. The study guide also contains much advice to the student on approaches to the course material, as well as lists of topics for assignments, notes which reinforce and expand the lectures, and additional questions on the readings. The course text must be purchased separately.

Course Format:

ENGL 2902 treats its subjects chronologically, beginning with Pope and Swift in the 18th Century and continuing in historical sequence up to Arnold’s  “Dover Beach,” published in 1867. In each case, the background of the texts is explained in detail so that the student acquires an awareness of the social, political, and often the philosophical attitudes of the age from which the works of literature are taken. While the texts need not necessarily be studied in chronological sequence, the course seeks to give the student an appreciation of the development of literature in English from the Restoration to the Victorians.

Course Texts:

Required
The Norton Anthology of English Literature, vol.2
Mary Shelley, Frankenstein ( any edition will do)  OR Charlotte Bronte’s Jane Eyre (again, any edition will do). As noted in the Study Guide, there are lectures on both novels, but students are responsible for only one.
