ENGL 2901  Survey of English Literature from the beginnings to 1660

Three (3) credit hours

This survey course studies English literature from the beginnings to 1660. ENGL 2902 introduces the student to the close examination of major poetic texts.

Grade of C or better in ENGL 1000 or its equivalent (i.e., ENGL 1145:Introduction to Prose Narrative; ENGL 1143: Introduction to the Novel). ENGL2901 is not available to students who have completed ENGL 2000 or 2900 on the Fredericton campus.

The Department of English must give approval before registration can be finalized.

ENGL 2901 consists of 24 digital audio recordings which contain lectures specially prepared for this course, but which cover exactly the same ground covered by the course given on the campus. The recordings are enriched by a detailed study guide which, through notes and illustrations, brings the words of the texts to life. The study guide also contains much advice to the student on approaches to the course material as well as lists of topics for assignments, and notes which reinforce and expand the lectures. The course text must be purchased separately.

ENGL 2901 treats its subjects chronologically, beginning with Beowulf and continuing in historical sequence up to Milton’s Paradise Lost (1667, 1674) In each case, the background of the texts is explained in detail so that the student acquires an awareness of the social, political, and often the philosophical attitudes of the age from which the works of literature are taken. While the texts need not necessarily be studied in chronological sequence, the course seeks to give the student an appreciation of the development of literature in English from the beginnings to 1660.

Form and Format

Students should also own – and use a good college dictionary
Supplemental readings are listed in the manual.

Students registered in the course will be expected to write two papers and a three-hour final examination.

Papers will be marked for expression and organization as well as content. To take advantage of the instructor's comments, students are advised to await return of their marked first assignment before starting to write their second. Students who are experiencing difficulty with specific aspects of writing are encouraged to review the appropriate sections of any good writing text.

The final examination must be written no later than six months from the effective commencement date, unless application has been made, and approval granted, for an extension of time.
