ENGL 1145 An Introduction to Prose Fiction

Course Description:

Examines a range of short stories, and perhaps one or two novels, from the 19th and 20th centuries. Writing skills are emphasized.

Course Features:

ENGL 1145 is presented online. Online features include lecture notes, an interactive writing tutorial with self-marking exercises, and examination preparation materials. The course texts must be purchased separately.

Course Format:

ENGL 1145 introduces a number of classic short stories before moving on to explore more recent works. The emphasis is on the writer's craft: the structure developed and the devices used to create works of fiction.

Course Texts:

The Norton Anthology of Short Fiction is recommended; the course selection is compatible with both the 5th and 6th editions. Most of the stories can be found elsewhere, and many of the older ones are available online (three are included in the online course materials).

Assignments & Examinations:

Students will write three papers which will be marked for grammar, style, and organization as well as content. The online marking system produces detailed comments; students are urged to review these carefully.

There will be a three-hour final examination which must be written no later than six months from the effective commencement date, unless application has been made, and approval granted, for an extension of time.

Students are also required to complete the online exercises; these are worth 5% of the final grade.
