CHE 2501 General Materials Science

Course Description:

The principles relating the properties and behavior of engineering materials to their structure; atomic bonding forces and strength of interatomic and intermolecular bonding forces, atomic arrangements in solids, structural imperfections and atom movements in solids; principles of phase diagrams and their application to multiphase materials, with particular reference to the iron-carbon system; mechanical and electrical properties of engineering material; semiconductors, polymers and ceramics; and their relation to internal structure.

Prerequisite:

(CHEM 1882 or CHEM 1001/1012, or equivalent), MATH 1013 or equivalent

The LMS-based course is structured in Learning Modules. Most of the modules contain slides, a forum-style discussion section, sample problems, and a brief chapter summary. These materials should be used in conjunction with the course text (see Course Text below).

Materials Science and Engineering - An Introduction, W.D. Callister Jr., John Wiley & Sons -- 6th edition to the current edition is acceptable.

Assignments and Examinations:

Regular self-motivated assignments, one self-motivated midterm test and one self-motivated final exam will help the learner to prepare for the 100% final exam.
