Course Description:

Financial Accounting, which is covered in ADM1213, focuses on the provision of financial information for parties external to an organization. Managerial Accounting, on the other hand, focuses on the financial/economic information needs of individuals inside the organization.

Internal decision makers need information for short-term planning and control as well as for long-term strategic planning and non-routine decision-making. The objective of this course is to provide you with a clear understanding of basic concepts and techniques used in managerial accounting. The techniques and concepts you will be exposed to will focus on those that facilitate the planning, control and decision making activities of an organization.

By the conclusion of this course, you should be able to:

  • Recognize, understand and work with costs that behave in different ways.
  • Develop product and service costs using various overhead allocation methods.
  • Understand how to account for inventory and cost of goods sold using a job order costing system.
  • Use cost/volume/profit analysis as an analytical tool.
  • Prepare a master budget.
  • Differentiate among responsibility centres and be able to analyze Return on Investment and Residual Income to assist in the evaluation of responsibility centres.
  • Explain the use of balanced score-cards to assess performance and the use of range of transfer prices for responsibility centres.
  • Comprehend the concept of relevant cost analysis and be able to apply it to the analysis of alternatives for various types of decisions.

Course Features:

The course material includes videos, textbook readings, discussion groups, online assignments, online quizzes and an online final examination

Course Format:

The course is divided into nine modules, each of which corresponds to one chapter in the textbook. Most modules start with a short video providing an overview of chapter content. Each module then directs the learner to: the required reading; a discussion group and an online graded assignment.  In addition, there is an online graded quiz, covering 2 chapters, every second module. 

After the nine modules are completed an Exam Request Form, which is available from the exams section of the College of Extended Learning Website: Student Information, must be completed to arrange a time and location to write the final examination.

Mandatory course material:
  1. Textbook: Garrison, Chesley, Carroll, Webb, Libby; Managerial Accounting, Ninth Canadian Edition, McGraw-Hill Ryerson, 2012.
  2. McGraw-Hill Connect: McGraw-Hill Connect is a web-based assignment and assessment program.  Assignments, quizzes and the final will be written in Connect. In addition to providing access to testing and assignment material, Connect also has a number of valuable resources, including an e-book that is an electronic version of the textbook.  If a new textbook is purchased then a free Connect access code is provided.

    If a used textbook is purchased a student will also need to purchase an access code. The cost to purchase the access code is $82.17 so this must be kept in mind when making the decision to purchase a used textbook.

Assignments & Examinations:

The final grade will be based on online assignments, online quizzes and an invigilated online final examination.
