How does Prior Learning Assessment (PLA) work at UNB?
UNB has a progressive Prior Learning Assessment policy whereby a student's previous learning can be evaluated and may be credited toward a specific UNB program of study.

The Difference between Transfer of Credit & PLAR
Transfer of Credit: provides credit for previous formal course work. Transfer credit can be granted for work done at other universities or colleges as well as courses successfully completed at UNB.
PLAR: current UNB students or those in the process of applying to a UNB program, who have attained university-level prior learning through means other than formal university or college courses, can have this learning assessed for potential credit recognition. This could include:
- Workplace related training
- Independent study or non-credit courses
- Travel and residency or work in foreign countries
- Volunteer and community activity
It does not include:
- Number of years you have spent in a job.
- Number of workshops attended.
- Level of your position.
- Effort or time you have invested in preparing your portfolio.
In order to make an assessment of your learning, as it relates to the program you wish to enter (or in which you are admitted), a Faculty-based assessment committee will need to understand your prior knowledge /skills and how your learning relates to the desired outcomes of the program/course(s) for which the PLA credit is being sought. It is your responsibility to provide appropriate documentation to verify your learning claims.
Each case is treated individually and assessments are completed in a variety of ways to suit individual situations. Note: The PLA process can take a significant amount of time; it is, therefore, advisable to initiate a PLA submission well in advance of when an assessment decision is needed.
Students initiate the PLA submission process for credit to a degree program. In consultation with a designated PLA staff member, the student prepares relevant documentation for analysis. The evidence of learning is then presented and assessed through one or more of the following methods (determined by appropriate faculty):
- Portfolio of learning experience
- Interview with content specialist
- Product or skill demonstration
WHY engage in a PLA process?
- Determine personal strengths and goals
- Reduce duplication of learning
- Gain academic credits
- Save time and money in completing a degree
The result of a PLA evaluation is recorded subsequent to registration.
- Specific course/s for which credit has been approved through prior learning assessment are identified as such on the student's record. Unassigned credit to be applied to a student's program is also identified as such on the student record.
- Awarding partial credit for a course is also an option (partial credit does not appear on the student's transcript). When partial credit is awarded for a course, you will be asked to perform additional work to complete the course requirements and receive full credit for the course. Additional work to be completed will be specified in writing by the committee.
