French Beginners Level 1

Develop your French conversational skills in a relaxed, non-competitive atmosphere. By the end of this course, you will have some basic elementary vocabulary and be able to understand, ask and answer questions using simple sentences.

This course will cover greeting and farewells, making phone calls, talking about you and your family and other simple topics. You will learn the alphabet and French sounds, numbers, days and months, colours, telling time, adjectives, possession and some verbs in the present tense.

Materials

The textbook "Learn French the Fast and Fun Way" by E. Leete, 4th Edition - Barrons Educational Series. This book is available on Amazon. The text is also available through UNB bookstores.

About the instructor

Mary Fraser is originally from Nova Scotia, and has been living and teaching language in Rothesay, New Brunswick since 2014. Mary worked in Spain, France and Luxembourg before accepting a job in a Canadian private school setting. Mary teaches language lessons for all levels, with a focus on oral and conversational instruction in a relaxed atmosphere. Mary loves reading, writing, music and travel, and spending time with her daughters and husband Peter.

She is a watercolour artist, a children’s book author, holds a Bachelor’s degree in Modern Languages, a Bachelor of Education specializing in Spanish, French and English, and she is currently studying her Master’s degree at St. FX University researching the role confidence plays in language acquisition.

Kendra MacMillan was born and raised in Saint John. After earning an Arts/Education degree 2010, Kendra moved to Sainte Marie, QC for the opportunity to gain teaching experience and to learn French. Kendra has a passion for learning and teaching French as she realizes its importance for creating opportunities in a bilingual province. She currently works as a Needs Assessment Specialist with Social Development.
