Elements of Art and Acrylic

Your first steps in painting: an eight-week course that explores the basic elements of art; line, shape, colour, form, value, space and texture. Using primarily acrylic paint the course will explore each element which are the basic building blocks to creating dynamic and interesting works of art.

Each week will involve a warm-up art activity, a lesson on an element of art, a brief look at each element throughout art history and a painting exercise.

  • Week 1: Intro to the course and the elements of art, the element of Line
  • Week 2: Space (perspective warm up & still life exercise)
  • Week 3: Shape (stencil group warm up & folk art exercise)
  • Week 4: Form (card sculpture warm up & 3D object exercise)
  • Week 5: Value (warm-up & gradation “umbra” silhouette exercise)
  • Week 6: Colour (“paint the hand you're dealt” warm up & abstract exercise)
  • Week 7: Texture (“my monster is...” warm up & leaf exercise)
  • Week 8: Composition (and a chance show your work)

Materials

Students will need to bring, pencil and eraser, acrylic paints, set of 5 brushes ranging from small to large, 9 x 12 canvas or acrylic paper pad. If students are unsure of which materials to get, it will be discussed during the first class. The instructor will provide photocopied handouts and a pizza box per students.

About the instructor

An accomplished artist and all around creative type, Jo studied visual art teaching, theatre production and arts-based approaches to peace-building. Her career as a scenic painter for film and theatre has taken her across Canada. Jo’s work has always focused on creating new collaborative art that engages communities in meaningful dialogue about who they are and how they can connect. She is excited to have the opportunity to teach again and help more people develop their artistic voice.
