Digital SLR Photography Basics

Making the most of your digital camera requires a sound knowledge of the basics of digital photography. This course will ensure you have an excellent base to get you started and on which to build. You’ll practice what you learn and receive feedback to help you improve.

You will gain a good understanding of the basics of photography, terminology, techniques and solutions for specific challenges that will allow you to unleash your creative potential. Using a hands-on approach you will become comfortable with the different modes and functions of your camera, practice image composition, learn to download, sort and organize your photos, and much more.

The following topics will be covered in class:

  • Camera buttons, dials and key menus
  • ISO, shutter speed and aperture
  • Autofocus options
  • Basics of flash
  • JPEG/NEF (RAW) choice
  • Exposure Modes: From Auto to Manual
  • Creative use of exposure controls
  • White Balance and Lens choices
  • Light, Composition, Framing

About the instructor

Alyssa Donaldson is a professional nature photographer in Saint John New Brunswick, alumni from the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design and graduated from UNB with a Bachelor’s Degree in Applied Arts. Specializing in macro nature photography, her fine art prints have been displayed in galleries throughout the province. She plans to live and work in New Brunswick as she finds it overflowing with environmental and cultural richness.
