D.I.Y. Handy-Woman’s Course 2

This course is the long-awaited sequel to our popular DIY Handy-Woman's Course! We asked students who have taken the DIY 1 class what they needed to learn next, and this new class will explore a variety of topics outlined below. This is for you if you have some experience working with tools and want to learn more about handling power tools, cutting trim, proper techniques in painting and finishing and tile work.

Have a look at the detailed outline below, and get ready for the next step into DIY!

Tile Setting - Learn to install a kitchen back-splash:

  • Use of tile cutting tools including a wet saw
  • Laying out tile
  • Exploring types of tile and their properties
  • Adhesive and mortar types
  • Finishing trim options
  • Grout types and application method
  • Grout repair
  • Drilling/cutting through laid tile

Power Tool Operation - Learn the safe and proper use of all common hand power tools, including:

  • Circular saw
  • Router
  • Angle grinder
  • Belt and Palm sander
  • Jig Saw

Plus an introduction to:

  • Air nailers & Compressors
  • Table Saw

Painting and finishing:

  • Proper painting techniques for walls
  • Brush and roller types, use and maintenance
  • Staining and protecting finish pieces

Trim work:

  • Installing baseboard, window and door casements & crown molding
  • Finishing for paint
  • Exploring wood types and their properties

About the instructor

Glen is a residential/commercial General Contractor located in Saint John whose company, Echelon Home, specializes in home improvement. Glen’s 20+ years of experience in home repair and commercial building maintenance will provide students will the knowledge and practical skills to take on some basic DIYs projects in their own homes. Glen is looking forward to helping those who want to have a more hands-on relationship with their homes and the things in it. He promises his classroom will be fun, fast paced and most of all, extremely informative.Glen is also a part-time musician and a recognized volunteer in community development.
