D.I.Y. Handy-Woman’s Course

Many women don’t aspire to be die-hard do-it-yourselfers, but it’s good to know what to do when the lights go out, the tap is dripping, hinges and doors are squeaking, or your car is acting up. This 4-week course will guide you through the basics of plumbing, electricity, carpentry and auto maintenance so that you can take care of the normal chores, projects and emergencies that spring up in life. Be helpless no more!

Week 1 - Carpentry

  • undertake simple repairs around the home
  • fill your toolkit with the basics
  • hang a picture
  • fix a chair rung
  • how to use your measuring tape
  • the names of various nails and screws
  • know when it’s time to call a professional
  • find a wall stud
  • do's and don’ts

Week 2 - Plumbing

  • turn off the water in your house
  • repair a leaky faucet
  • repair loose taps and pipes
  • unplug a toilet
  • repair a running toilet
  • to speak “plumbing” to your plumber
  • know when to call a profession
  • do's and don’ts

Week 3 - Electrical

  • understand your fuse box
  • use breakers
  • change fuses
  • wire/rewire a lamp
  • repair frayed wires
  • survive a power failure
  • install a smoke detector
  • change a battery in your smoke detector
  • do's and don’ts
  • know when to call a professional

Week 4 - Car maintenance

  • check tire pressure
  • fill tires with air
  • check fluid levels
  • add fluids to your car
  • access tire conditions
  • when and how to change your tires
  • understand car maintenance terminology
  • how to speak “car” to your mechanic
  • create a household/car diary
  • do's and don’ts

About the instructor

Glen is a residential/commercial General Contractor located in Saint John whose company, Echelon Home, specializes in home improvement. Glen’s 20+ years of experience in home repair and commercial building maintenance will provide students will the knowledge and practical skills to take on some basic DIYs projects in their own homes. Glen is looking forward to helping those who want to have a more hands-on relationship with their homes and the things in it. He promises his classroom will be fun, fast paced and most of all, extremely informative.Glen is also a part-time musician and a recognized volunteer in community development.
