Irish Language - Beginners

Experience one of the oldest languages in Northern Europe – the Irish language. Let instructor Ian Mac Gabhann be your lingusitic guide to this introductory course. Over this 10-week class, you’ll develop a solid foundation in the Irish language, learn common phrases and sentence structure using basic yet useful vocabulary, all in a comfortable, social, and non-formal setting.

You’ll explore basic written, oral and aural skills on topics such as family, likes and dislikes, and day-to-day activities. Ian Mac Gabhann will also share his personal insights into the Irish culture and how the langauge has impacted the country’s mentality, humour and spoken English today. And as an added bonus, you’ll also expereince some of Ian’s favorite Irish foods and drink, along with traditional Irish songs and folklore!

This course is perfect for anyone who:

  • has an interest in languages
  • has Irish heritage
  • is simply interested in Irish identity, culture and language
  • simply wants to try something completely new and different!

About the instructor

Ian Mac Gabhann is an Irish Language Instructor at St. Thomas University. Originally from from Dublin, Ireland, Ian has a BA in Music, an Nua-Ghaeilge (modern Irish language) and Media Studies from Maynooth University, as well as an MA in Communications (through Irish) from Acadamh na hOllscolaíochta Gaeilge, NUI Galway.

Ian was an Irish language/music teacher with Coláiste Lurgan for three years. Afterwards he worked on PEIG - an online business directory for Irish language services - with Irish language organisations Conradh na Gaeilge and Foras na Gaeilge. He is currently the visiting Irish language scholar in his second year of teaching at St. Thomas University through the Ireland Canada University Foundation.
