Encaustic - Wax Painting

Photo: Encaustic wax equipment

CCOM 1033

Ancient, modern, and currently popular, encaustic (coloured melted beeswax) can be your new way of painting! When it’s hot, it’s ‘wet’, and when cool, it’s ‘dry’ – and in between you can carve, cut, fill, scrape, texturize, melt, take off and build up. You can even stencil and collage! Ten minutes of demo and instruction and you’re off, exploring, learning, and most of all, playing in a most creative way. This teacher learns a new trick from a student with each workshop; that tells you something about the possibilities!

About the instructor

Educated at NSCAD University in the ‘80s, Sarah Petite has been painting professionally for thirty-five years. During the past twenty-six of these, she has made encaustic painting her flagship medium - self-taught in a time when encaustic was little remembered or understood. Petite has shown her paintings in galleries throughout the Maritimes and is currently engaged with Secord Gallery in Halifax, Nova Scotia.
