Open entry online credit courses

TEMP

Open entry online credit courses are open year-round to UNB/STU undergraduate and graduate students, adult learners, students studying at other post-secondary institutions, and prospective students. These courses provide the same university credit as our in-person courses but are 100% online and self-paced (once registered, you have 6 months to complete your course).

There is a $150 non-refundable/non-transferable online fee per course in addition to applicable tuition & fees. Learn more about tuition and fees and methods of payment.

  2. Once you are on the course webpage, scroll to the bottom and click "Apply Now".
  3. Fill out and submit the application form.
  4. Once submitted, you will receive an email confirmation.
  5. After your application is reviewed, you will be emailed the next step to become registered in the course(s).

NOTE: You cannot self-register for open entry online courses through UNB’s internal Student Planning & Registration system.

Government student loan programs (Canadian and US) require courses be completed within a traditional term timeframe.

This means, if you are a government student loan recipient, you must complete any open entry courses within the term in which you register.

Therefore, you will not have the standard six months to complete open entry online courses. Instead, your fall term completion date is Dec. 31, your winter term completion date is April 30, and your summer term completion date is Aug. 31.

What is a Full-time (FT) student at UNB?

A student carrying the equivalent of three or more courses in a term is a full-time student.

What is a Part-time (PT) student at UNB?

A student carrying less than the equivalent of three courses in a term is a part-time student.

I am currently registered as a Part-time (PT) student in two courses. Can I add another online course?

If you wish to add another online course, this would change your status to full-time. You will be required to pay full-time tuition & fees and you must follow the application deadlines for full-time students.

I am a student from another institution. Can I apply for open entry online courses?

Yes. You will need to provide a "Letter of Permission" (LOP) from your home institution.

I am a STU student. Can I take open entry online courses?

Yes. You must submit the online application, obtain a "Letter of Permission" and submit payment requested. STU full-time students follow UNB full-time enrolment guidelines. STU letter of permision for off-campus study will follow the enrolment deadlines based on the number of courses you are taking with UNB. It is your responsibility to meet STU Registrar's Office deadlines.

How long do I have to complete an open entry online course?

You will have 6 months to complete the course; however, you can certainly complete it sooner—you set the pace (student loan recipients, see the following question).

I am student loan funded. How long do I have to complete an open entry online course?

Government student loan programs (Canadian and US) require courses be completed within a traditional academic term timeframe. This means, if you are a government student loan recipient, you must complete any open entry courses within the term in which you register. Therefore, you will not have the standard six months to complete open entry online courses (fall term completion date is Dec. 31, winter term completion date is April 30, and summer term completion date is Aug. 31). This is a Student Loan requirement, and cannot be adjusted, changed, or extended by UNB.

What is the tuition and fees per course in the Fall and/or Winter academic terms?

There is a $150 non-refundable/non-transferable online fee per course in addition to applicable tuition & fees. Tuition and fees depend on your program of study. Visiting and/or Undergraduate No Degree students follow the same fee structure as the Arts program.

What is the tuition & fees during Summer Term?

Courses taken during the summer term are charged per course (using the part-time rates), regardless of the number of courses you are registered for. Exceptions would apply for programs designed to be full-time for all 3 terms of study.

Will there ever be a time when I cannot enrol because the course is full?

No. The courses are open year-round and are offered every academic term. There is no enrollment cap, and they will be available for you to incorporate into your schedule.

I am late in applying/being registered for a course. How will I catch-up on the material I missed?

You have not missed anything and do not need to catch-up on any course work. Open entry online courses are self-paced; therefore, there are no "log-in" or class meeting times like in-person courses. Once registered, you will start the course and proceed through the material at your own pace, completing on or before your official course end date.

I have applied for an open entry online course. What is my next step?

After you submit your online course application, you will be sent an "application received" email. Once your application has been reviewed, which can take up to 7 days, you will receive another email providing the next step to complete your application to be registered for the course(s). Watch your junk/spam folder and mark these emails as "not junk".

I have a question about my course application or registration. Who do I contact?

Contact CEL Client Services at extend@unb.ca or 506-453-4646 (Toll-free: 1-866-599-4646).

Is there a course instructor?

While there are no requirements for you to attend a specific virtual class time, there is an instructor assigned to the course who will be available to help answer any questions you have along the way. They may also offer virtual drop-in office hours or will be available for virtual appointments. Even though there is no class time, many courses offer video recorded lectures which will guide you through the material.

Do courses have final exams?

Review the individual course information page for the course(s) you are interested in applying for. On this page, it will indicate if the course has an exam(s) and if it requires invigilation.

What if I want to drop/withdrawal from the course after I have been registered?

Review the CEL Refund and Withdrawal Policies. Refer to the charts for refund amounts and notations that may appear on your academic record based on when you submit the Complete Course & Program Withdrawal Form.

What other supports are available to me during my course?

Our online support team is here to answer your questions as you progress through your course. We are here to help you, so email us at online@unb.ca or refer to the Online Student Guide for assistance.
