Navigating Medical Cannabis in the Workplace

Medical cannabis is becoming more widely accepted by physicians as a medication, which means the number of people being prescribed medical cannabis is rising. Managing medical cannabis in the workplace has quickly become a delicate balance between an organization's duty to accommodate its employees and its duty to maintain a safe workplace.

It’s an evolving and challenging topic that has and will impose significant implications for employers.

Medical cannabis in the workplace is a complex topic and requires specialized knowledge of medical cannabis, workplace policy and case law.

Workplaces have traditionally had a zero-tolerance approach to cannabis and, in most cases, workplace policies have not been updated to reflect the growing use and acceptance of medical cannabis. The introduction of medical cannabis policies in the workplace is imperative.

Involving the workforce with a clear understanding and strategy will become a necessary avenue to ensure compliance to acceptable standards.

This one day conference brings together a team of subject matter experts to ensure you have an understanding of medical cannabis and its medical utility. But, also tools to better mitigate risk in your organization.

The session will involve a panel discussion to enable attendees to voice industrial and workplace concerns.

This course is designed for anyone who is managing cannabis in the workplace, including Heath & Safety Professionals, HR, Disability Management, Union Representatives, Managers, Supervisors, and Front-Line Team Leaders.


Dr. Andrea Burry is the Medical Director of Trauma Healing Centers.

Dr. Burry completed her Bachelor of Science in Physiology and Psychology at the University of Western Ontario and both her Masters of Science and Medical Degree at the University of Toronto.

Dr. Burry moved to New Brunswick in 2006 after completing her residency in Family Medicine at Sunnybrook Hospital in Toronto.

Over the course of her practice, Dr. Burry has developed interests in Occupational Medicine and most recently in medical cannabis and the role that it can play in treating conditions such as post-traumatic stress disorder and chronic pain.

Dr. Burry currently divides her time between occupational medicine in both the public and private sector and Trauma Healing Centers, where she has both clinical and administrative roles.

Dr. Jamie Cox has spent over 20 years implementing successful programs for population health, disability, and injury prevention while working with public and private industry in both the USA and Canada. As the prior Chief Medical Officer for the Workers’ Compensation Board of Nova Scotia Canada, Dr. Cox implemented new processes, which dramatically improved provincial disability durations for workers of the province.

His experience includes General Motors, USA where he held the role of medical director for one of the largest GM Powertrain facilities nationwide. Subsequently,e was promoted to the role of Corporate Medical Director of Saturn Corp., Springhill TN USA. Dr. Cox’s leadership responsibilities encompassed health care initiatives, disability, workers compensation, health and safety, and work-related injuries and illnesses. Dr. Cox has been successful in developing strategies for containment in health care costs while also working as an advocate in the medical community to support best practices and improved communication.

He currently is providing consultative services in medical cannabis and has evaluated over 1700 patients.

Trev Bungay was born and raised in Newfoundland, in an east coast fishing village named LaScie. Directly upon graduation from high school Trev commenced studies in Criminology at Academy Canada in Corner Brook, Newfoundland. Trev’s longtime interest in the Canadian Forces prevailed, however, and he opted to focus his attention on this profession of-choice and soon enrolled and relocated to Oromocto, New Brunswick.

Trev served 17 years in the infantry completing 7 missions in Bosnia, Haiti & Africa, and 4 tours to Afghanistan. Leading groups of 8-10 troops in combat, per mission, and upwards of 40 troops for 6 months, as a mobile force. Trev formally retired from the military in 2014 and embarked upon a new career path – the world of real estate, working with clients on the purchase and sale of both residential and commercial properties throughout the greater Fredericton, and surrounding, area. In addition to real estate, Trev is also a local business owner; CEO of a property development company.

His investment in the military, and more specifically working with those suffering from PTSD, has led him to his new position as Vice President of Veteran Relations for Trauma Healing Centers Inc - clinics which assist veterans and first responders dealing with PTSD and Chronic Pain. Trev’s role within THC will cater directly to his passion for helping those suffering from PTSD. Trev will now be on the frontlines, in a very different form.

André Carroll is a bilingual associate practicing in the areas of general corporate and commercial law, real estate and tax law at Tripp | Business Law. Since joining the firm in May 2015, André has also been advising and working with clients from the medical cannabis and hemp industry.

Prior to his bar admission in 2014, André studied Law and Finance at the Université de Moncton, completing his Bachelors of Business Administration in 2009 and his Juris Doctor in 2013.

After graduating from the Université de Moncton, he started a taxation program at HEC Montréal. André co-authored the New Brunswick Business Corporations Act & Commentary book (Lexis Nexis, 2016) with two other members of Tripp | Business Law. He is also a member of the Canadian Tax Foundation and instructs Tax Law at the Université de Moncton.
