Certificate in Management Essentials

Position yourself – and your company – for success!

The online Certificate in Management Essentials (CME) covers the basic skills every supervisor or manager needs to succeed. This certificate sets you apart from the competition and improves your chances of breaking into or advancing in a management career. Courses teach real-world skills, techniques, and processes that you can apply in any supervisory or managerial position. The CME is offered completely online, in a self-paced format that fits your schedule. You can register at any time but each course must be completed within six weeks from confirmation of registration.

This certificate, designed by subject matter experts, addresses the specific core competencies required to be a successful manager. The curriculum has been reviewed and approved by the University Senate. Each course includes three core competencies that provide a comprehensive introduction to management. Each course also includes a final evaluation that allows employees to demonstrate their learning and progress. Employees can also customize their program to focus on their specific gaps in skills and knowledge. In addition to six core courses, employees can choose four out of twelve electives, based on their identified needs and interest.


Gain knowledge and awareness of your current management and leadership abilities through a Management Essentials Competency Assessment (MECA). As you work through CME courses, you can re-visit the assessment to track your progress.

Howatt (Dr. Bill) provides executive coaching and leadership development to organizations around the world, including executives in federal and provincial government, the finance sector, health care, and manufacturing.

Author of over 160 books, columns, and articles on personal and management development, human resources, and addictions, Dr. Bill's works include the Howatt HR Elements Series and The Addiction Counselor Desk Reference. One of his most recent books, TalOp (Talent and Operations Management) Taking the Guesswork out of Management, is a foundational text for a management methodology that supports a disciplined, fact-finding approach for improving people effectiveness and engagement and process efficiency for all levels of an organization. He is also the author of the TalOp Methodology for Organizational Analysis. For five years, he authored Coach’s Corner, a monthly business column in The Chronicle Herald and is now a regular contributor to The Globe and Mail’s 9 to 5 career column and Leadership Lab.
