New Brunswick Limb Deficiency Clinic
Introduction
The main focus of the prosthetics facility is the fitting of powered upper extremity prostheses (electronic artificial arms) and other upper extremity prosthetic devices. These prostheses can range from custom designed devices for work or recreation, to passive, cosmetic or sports prostheses. Specialized lower extremity prostheses are also offered under our new lower extremity research program. Each client (infant, child, adolescent or adult) is assessed at a clinic and fitted with a prosthesis which best meets his or her needs.
Who may benefit?
The Institute of Biomedical Engineering provides services for individuals referred by their physician. Upper extremity prostheses have been made for people with a variety of limb losses, from a partial hand amputation to complete or multiple limb loss. Lower extremity prosthetic services to date have been provided to clients who require specialized involvement as offered by the Institute team. Clients come predominantly from Atlantic Canada, however, some clients travel from as far as 5,000 km away to receive prostheses. The youngest client fitted with a prosthesis has been 4 months old and the oldest was over 78 years old at the time of initial fitting.
