Susan M. Stanley (BA’61) of Montreal, QC, has recently retired as Coordinator of the Heritage Trust Fund, Montreal-Ottawa Conference, United Church of Canada. She founded this Fund in 1988 to help preserve the archives, historic churches and cemeteries in the Conference area of Quebec and eastern Ontario, as well as to support related research projects and publications. As Archivist of Montreal-Ottawa Conference for over twenty years she supervised the collection, listing and transfer of the extensive archival holdings to the Archives nationales du Quebec in Montreal, Bishop's University Archives (ETRC), Lennoxville, and the City of Ottawa Archives. Susan will spend her retirement in Montreal, at her summer home in Charlo, NB, and in south-east Kent, England where her children and grandchildren live. @

Joan Drake (Gardiner, BN'66) of Hampden, Maine, plans to retire from nursing in June 2011. For the last 26 years she has been working in nurse management in psychiatric nursing. Her retirement plans are to enjoy time with family . . . husband, son, daughter, and granddog. She will also continue to enjoy her e-mails from family and friends.

Robert L. Kenny (BA’66, BCL'68) of Fredericton, NB has accepted a position as counsellor with Cox & Palmer.  He dedicates much of his spare time to organizations such as the YM-YWCA, the United Way, the ALS Society and the Fredericton North Rotary Club.

Jacob H. Masliyah (MScCHE’66) of Edmonton, AB is Professor Emeritus of Chemical and Materials Engineering at the University of Alberta and a key contributor to the technological and scientific advancement of the energy industry. His work includes important research into the complex interactions between oil, water and sand particles to improve oil recovery from Alberta's oil sands. He is an Officer of the Order of Canada.

Thomas (Thom) McKenzie (BPE’66, BEd’69) of San Diego, Calif., was inducted into the Hall of Fame, College of Education and Human Ecology, The Ohio State University on Nov. 6, 2009. This honour is in recognition of the most outstanding achievements of alumni and former faulty.

Gerald (Gerry) Pond (BA’66, DLitt'04-SJ) of Rothesay, NB received the Canadian Red Cross Humanitarian Award for his outstanding contribution to poverty reduction in the region.

Alfred H. Brien (BBA'67, LLB'69) was honoured with the 2009 Outstanding Achievement Award of the Schizophrenia Society of Canada. Judge Brien advocated for, developed and implemented the Saint John Mental Health Court, which he has presided over for nine years. This court provides a team approach to therapeutic justice for people in conflict with the law due to mental illness or intellectual disabiliy.

Dennis J. Furlong (BPE’67, LLD’08) of Dalhousie, NB has been awarded the Canadian Medical Association's (CMA) 2012 Sir Charles Tupper Award for Political Action in recognition of his tireless efforts to educate government, policy-makers and the public on health issues and to advance healthy public policy.

Arvind Varma (MScCHE’68) of West Lafayette, IN is the Jay and Cynthia Ihlenfeld Head of Chemical Engineering at the West Lafayette campus of the School of Chemical Engineering of Purdue University. Arvind’s research interests are in chemical and catalytic reaction engineering, new energy sources and synthesis of advanced materials.

Charles Broderick (MA’70) of Riverview, NB, was ordained to the priesthood on December 1st, 2012 at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in Riverview, NB. Charles completed his theology at Holy Apostles Seminary in Cromwell, CT.

Charles Humphrey (BA'70) of Barrie, Ont., retired from his law firm at the end of 2008 after practising labour and employment law in Toronto for 30 years. He began 2009 with an intensive French-language program at the Institute de Francais in Villefranche just outside of Nice followed by four months at his second home near Toulouse, France. In September 2009, he began a new career with his appointment to the Ontario Labour Relations Board as a vice-Chair. He is also practising as a labour arbitrator.

Peter Hunt (BScME'70) of Calgary has hit 65, is still enjoying work (and fun), and so has taken a new position with Suncor. He will be responsible for establishing the strategy for reliability for the company. As for the fun, recovering from a groin pull is no fun, but he is back to running, and shortly will be back to racing. Both Joyce and Peter do miss the beautiful area where our home is, Kennett Square in suburban Philadelphia.

Peter Hunt (BScME’70) of Kennett Square, PA, has recently retired at the end of June 2012 and is now keeping busy doing consulting. He spent 4 weeks in Abu Dhabi, and he is now doing some work in southern Virginia.  He retired because his wife Joyce's book (www.localpushglobalpull.com) was published, and he didn’t want to work every day. They moved to their home in the US and now have the luxury of what jobs he takes on. He bought himself a new car which he calls his Econocar. "It gets better mileage than Joyce’s SUV. Best yet it is fun to drive. It is a Porsche Boxster." @

Anne M. Jeffries (Byrne, BA’71, LLB'74) of Upper Golden Grove, NB has retired as provincial court judge after 15 years on the bench.  Anne has said she would like to spend more time with family. She has three step-children and four grandchildren.

Richard Emmerson Rice (BBA'72) has retired from the innovation, science and technology branch of Canada Border Services Agency (formerly Canada Customs), Ottawa, after 34 years of public service. In 1986, he joined Indian and Northern Affairs Canada in Hull, Que., where he managed the development of several key informatics projects. These included Indian oil and gas royalties, northern forest fire management and Inuit art inventory management. He then moved to the customs and excise branch of Revenue Canada, National Capital Region. Here, he took a lead role in the creation and implementation of a training program in system methodology and project management in the information technology environment. In 2001, the Professional Institute of the Public Service of Canada presented him its annual meritorious service award. It was given in recognition of his outstanding work on behalf of the 14,000 computer systems and information technology professionals employed by the Government of Canada. Richard and his wife Debra are now both retired and divide their time between homes in Ottawa and Thousand Islands, Ont.

Patricia Theriault (Boileau, BA’72, BEd'73) of Waterville, ME, recently retired after a twenty-five year career in adult education. For her outstanding contribution to the field, she was the recipient of the Gerald Levasseur Award, the highest honour presented annually by the Maine Adult Education Association. Last fall, she joined fellow alumni, including a special group of women from the class of 1972, at Homecoming in Fredericton. @

Ernest Drapeau (LLB’74) of Shediac, NB, Chief Justice of New Brunswick has been appointed first Vice-Chair of the Canadian Judicial Council by the Honourable Beverley McLachlin, Chief Justice of Canada. Chief Justice Drapeau is the first Chief Justice of New Brunswick to occupy that position.  @

Forrest Orser (BA’74), of Fredericton, NB after more than 33 years as a reporter and editor for The Daily Gleaner, has accepted a buyout.  Now he is available for work as a writer or editor. His short story, Wild Horses on an Island, appeared in the summer 2011 of The Fiddlehead.  And his very short story, Soap and Sex, appeared in this fall¹s Soliloquies Anthology, published at Concordia University. Richard J. Scott (BBA’74, LLB’76) of Fredericton, NB has commenced his term as president of the Law Society of New Brunswick.  Richard is Counsel in the Fredericton office of McInnes Cooper with a litigation practice that focuses on complex legal issues and appellate advocacy.

James P. Adams (LLB’75) of St. John's, NL, former Newfoundland Supreme Court Justice, has retired from the bench and has been appointed president of the Canadian Superior Courts Judges Association (CSCJA). He will be the first judge from the Newfoundland Supreme Court trial division and only the second judge ever from Newfoundland to be named to the position.

Bernard Boudreau (BSc'75) was elected as a fellow of the Royal Society of Canada (The National Academies) in June 2011. Dr. Boudreau is currently the dean of graduate studies at Dalhousie University, where he also holds a Killam professorship. This honour recognizes Bernie's world-class contributions in marine geology, geochemistry and geophysics. He lives in Halifax with his wife Elizabeth (Fleming).

Kenneth McCullogh (LLB’75) of Rothesay, NB, was listed in the 2012 Guide to the Leading US/Canada Cross-Border Litigation Lawyers in Canada.  The guide is one of several guides that identify leading law firm and lawyers across Canada in a range of areas of law based on input from informed users and observers of the provision of legal services.  He has also been invited to join as a Fellow of the Canadian College of Construction Lawyers.

Brian Edwards (BSc'76) and his wife Shelley, son Mckenzie and daughter Madison live in Mississauga, Ont. In April 2009, Brian became director of marketing and sales for DuPont Canada. Carolyn MacDonald (Fraser, BN'76) has recently retired after 32 years in public health nursing at Durham Region Health Department, Whitby, Ont. In August 2010, she moved with her husband Glen MacDonald (BScME'76) to Frelighsburg, Que. Glen recently retired after 29 years employment with Ontario Power Generation, Pickering, Ont. Their new address in the Eastern Townships of Quebec offers all the cycling and alpine skiing they like, and places them closer to New Brunswick. UNB friends are always welcome.

She is among five Canadians being inducted. Nominees are sponsored by two current academy fellows and are selected by a panel comprised of elected and appointed fellows. Selection is based, in part, on the extent to which nominees' nursing careers influence health policies and health care delivery. She is currently a professor and Canada Research Chair at the University of Alberta in Edmonton.

Thomas A. Anna Chrzanowski (Walewska, MScME’79) of Fredericton, NB, Adjunct Professor and Senior Research Associate in the Department of Geodesy and Geomatics Engineering at UNB, has received the life title of Professor of Technical Sciences in the Republic of Poland.  The title was awarded by Bronislaw Komorowski, President of Poland, at a special event in the presidential palace in Warsaw in May 2012.

Randi Ferguson (Stangroom, BPE'79) of Lethbridge, Alta., recently attended a 90th birthday party in Vancouver for her father, Bob Stangroom, a PE professor from 1964-1986. Her mother, Mary-Lou, and sisters, Karen and Mary-Kay (BN'86) were also present, as well as six grandkids, three of his siblings, in-laws, nieces, nephews and numerous friends. Gretchen Kelbaugh (BEd'79, BA'92) of Quispamsis, N.B., a full-time filmmaker and writer, has finished her feature educational documentary, Menocracy, about how to quickly get more women elected to governments in Canada, the U.S. and the U.K., and the urgent need for this. George Piers (PD-ED’79) of Lower Kingsclear, NB is retiring as administrator of Fredericton's Community Kitchen.  He spent his final days by helping out with the noon time meal.  Piers says the past 16-and a half years have been extremely rewarding. George shared the day with longtime cook Ken White and bookkeeper Sheryl Mercer. The trio has worked together at the kitchen for more than 14 years.

Nelda Robbins (BEd'79) of Fredericton has just finished volunteering at the 2010 Winter Olympics. She was a member of the course crew for the women's alpine ski events at the Whistler Creekside venue. It was an amazing experience and would not have been possible had she not taken that ski activity in fourth year on "Buchanan Mountain" behind the LBR Gym!

Ernest B. Beno, OMM, CD, (BBA'80), after four years as colonel commandant of The Royal Regiment of Canadian Artillery, hands over the honorary appointment on Oct. 1, and hangs up his uniform. During his tenure as colonel commandant, Brig.-Gen. (Ret'd) Beno visited Canadian gunners on operations in Afghanistan four times, had an audience with Queen Elizabeth II, placed artillery monuments in The Netherlands and Juno Beach, Normandy, France, and participated in scores of training exercises, ceremonial events and social activities across Canada. He took great pleasure in meeting young officers and soldiers on operations and training, and uniting them with veterans and retired members of the artillery. Joining the army as a gunner (private), he had the honour and pleasure to complete his service as the titular head of all of Canada's artillery, promoting all that is good about Canada's soldiers and her gunners. Marc Pepin (BEd'80) of Fredericton, by winning the N.B. Provincial Closed Tennis Championship title in Dieppe, N.B., in September, broke two Canadian records, one being the oldest player to do so at age 53 and the second the first Canadian player to win the provincial title in four different decades.

Brian Rosborough (BBA’80) of Fredericton, NB retired to the easy life in August.  His professional career was government tax auditing and assisting taxpayers in filing their (personal and business) tax returns and providing tax information.  Brian was employed with the New Brunswick Department of Finance for 17 1/2 years as an Auditor auditing Sales Taxes and Fuel Taxes requiring field visits to corporate Head Offices throughout Canada from Vancouver Island to Cape Breton and inter-Provincial government fuel tax Audits of all the large trucking companies based in New Brunswick.   Brian then transferred to the Canada Revenue Agency for 14 1/2 years auditing of GST/HST and Excise Taxes throughout New Brunswick.  Brian completed a career total of 2,452 tax audits of Companies and businesses in sizes from small business owners to tax auditing some of the largest Corporations in Canada - an interesting, rewarding and fun career and only once was threatened by a taxpayer in anger towards the Government.  Brian was very lucky to be born in Fredericton, to grow up on George Street in Fredericton, to graduate from FHS in 1974, to attend and graduate from UNB in Fredericton and then to work his complete career in Fredericton.  Brian still resides in Fredericton with his partner Karen and plans on continuing to be very active in sports (including Oldtimers hockey, Masters basketball, Fredericton Slopitch League, golf and membership at the YMCA), volunteering (including Chairing the local Terry Fox Run), to continue to travel often, sports pools, poker, more sleep, etc.  Brian is up for a golf game or poker game and/or a brew anytime with any current or past friends and can be contacted at tex@nbnet.nb.ca.    @

Anne is now employed by IBM. Her daughter Julie graduated with her doctorate in chemical and biological engineering from the University of Colorado in Boulder, Colo., in December 2009. Eric D. Welton most recently served as the Company’s Executive Vice President of Corporate and Digital Development & Theatre Operations.  In his new role, Welton will direct IMAX’s Theatre Sales and Operations worldwide, developing and executing strategies to further the Company’s growth and extend its leadership position in the entertainment technology industry.  In addition, he will oversee IMAX’s technology efforts in projection technology and serve as the executive in charge of the Company’s Canadian headquarters in Mississauga, ON.  @

Kevin White (BEd’87) has been working in Australia for 12 years. He is currently teaching at an independent school in Sydney (www.shore.nsw.edu.au). Recently two of his students have received significant awards from the University of Wollongong. In 2011 a year 11 student won two prizes, one for best Industrial Technology Project and Folio (Timber) and second prize overall for best Industrial Technology prize covering all subject areas. In 2012 his student won the same two prizes for year 10 in this state wide contest for New South Wales. Kevin graduated in 1987 and has been working overseas for most of his time since then. @

George Zakem (BScME’87) and Kelly Murray (LLB'99) of Toronto, ON are delighted to announce the birth of their twin girls, Kennedy Victoria Zakem and Katherine (Kate) Elizabeth Zakem on Thursday, Aug. 23, 2012 at Mount Sinai Hospital at 9:22 and 9:23 a.m. weighing 4 lbs and 3 oz. and 3 lbs and 12 oz.  Kate and Kennedy join big brothers Evan (3 1/2 years) and Reid (1 year).  The girls are welcomed by proud grandmothers, Mrs. Olga Murray (and the late Dr. Joseph Murray) of Guelph, Ontario and Mrs. Edith Zakem (and the late Mr. Joe Zakem) of Charlottetown, PE.  George is currently a Managing Director at Northleaf Capital Partners and Kelly is currently Assistant Vice President and Legal Counsel at Invesco Canada.  @

Derrick M. Fulton (LLB'88) of Toronto completed his master of laws (LLM) from York University, Osgoode Hall Law School, in 2006 and completed his major paper on the "Judicial Recognition of the Duty of Good Faith in Commercial Contracts." Mr. Fulton has just been granted the certified specialist designation in civil litigation by the law Society of Upper Canada. The Law Society of Upper Canada certifies only a small percentage of lawyers in Ontario as specialists. The certified specialist program incorporates superior standards and professional development requirements for lawyers in Ontario wishing to be certified.

Marsha Mann (Phelps, MScF'88) of South Frontenac, Ont., enjoyed a wonderful reunion with fellow alums Heather Cudmore-McCarthy (Class of '86) of Edmond, Okla., and Lucie Dempsey (BSc'87) of Apopka, Fla., in Marco Island, Florida, after connecting through Facebook . . . . Wonderful memories of our time at UNB. Marsha and her husband Paul reside north of Kingston, Ont., where Paul manages a busy national law practice and Marsha owns two businesses.

Mick Lord (BSc89) has been appointed director of standards operations with the Standards Council of Canada, based in Ottawa. In this capacity, he will oversee national and international standards-related policy matters, and ensure that Canadian input to the international standardization process meets Canada’s needs and interests. He is leaving the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission as director of safeguards accounting and technology, where he was a staff member for about 10 years. Mick and his wife Lynda continue to enjoy Ottawa. They both want to say hi to all their UNB friends.
