New hope for cancer research

Inspire | Tony Reiman and his colleagues across Canada are studying how new precision medicine tools could improve, and potentially save, the lives of patients diagnosed with multiple myeloma.

“Currently, patients are all treated and monitored the same way. For those patients whose treatment fails, we need to be able to find new ways of doing things to change that.” - Tony Reiman. Read more

Ian Church returns to UNB to lead ocean mapping group

University Highlights | Church (BScEng’06, MScEng’08, PhD’14) will work to expand the group’s research capabilities in the development of innovative methods and tools to manage, process, visualize and interpret ocean mapping data. Read more

UNB preparing for return of women’s varsity hockey

University Highlights | The UNB women’s varsity hockey team will be back on the ice in 2018. The team will be eligible to compete at the Atlantic University Sport and U Sports levels beginning in the 2018-19 season. Preparations are underway for construction of a therapy room and a locker room for the team, and a search is underway for a full-time coach. Read more

Inaugural health research chair in diabetes named

Alumni | An expert in population health and former analyst at the World Health Organization has been named to a $1 million health research chair in diabetes at UNB. Neeru Gupta becomes the first person to hold the Canadian Diabetes Association-New Brunswick Health Research Foundation chair in diabetes research. Read more

UNB launches new accelerator program

University Highlights | Energia Ventures, a newly established accelerator program at UNB, is helping startups get on solid footing by providing entrepreneurs with the tools and resources they need to grow and master their businesses.

Energia Ventures will help develop companies in the energy, clean tech and cybersecurity fields. The first cohort of startups enrolled in the program this winter. Read more

Alumni recognized among Canada’s outstanding principals

Alumni | Wayne Annis (MEd’00), Matthew Bedard (MEd’05) and Nancy Matthews (BEd’95) are among 40 principals who have received the Learning Partnerships 2017 Outstanding Principals award. They were nominated by parents, colleagues, and community members and are being recognized for demonstrating innovation, leadership and for employing creativity in finding solutions and opportunities within their school communities. Read more

Miles Pinsent to lead Canadian men’s soccer team at 2017 Summer Universiade

Four UNB alumni have been appointed to the Order of Canada

Alumni | Elaine Carty (BN’66), Michael Ignatieff (DLitt’01), Patricia Anne Lang (BN’70, Dlitt’09) and Gerry Pond (BA’66, DLitt’04) have been appointed to the Order of Canada. Created in 1967 with the motto Desiderantes meliorem patriam (They desire a better country), the Order of Canada is one of the country’s highest civilian honours, recognizing outstanding achievement, dedication to the community and service to the nation. Read more

Craig Norris’s climate change documentary receives international accolades

Alumni | Kokota: The Islet of Hope tells the story of an African island drastically affected by climate change, and follows the residents of the island as they identify and tackle the most pressing issues facing their community. Read more

UNB nursing clinic moves to permanent location

Impact | The Fredericton Downtown Community Health Centre, a key teaching and community resource for UNB Fredericton’s faculty of nursing has a larger, improved home. Its new location, in the core of the city’s downtown, will significantly increase the faculty’s capacity for education and community-based research, and offer a more accessible clinic for patients. Read more
