Shelley Rinehart recognized for her commitment to social justice

Shelley Rinehart (BA’84, MBA’88) received the True Growth Leadership award at the Saint John Chamber of Commerce’s annual Outstanding Business Awards dinner held in November.

Rinehart is a professor of marketing and MBA director in the faculty of business at UNB Saint John. She also serves as the deputy mayor of the City of Saint John.

She is an active member of the Saint John community, chairing the board of the Saint John YMCA and sitting on its capital campaign cabinet. She is also a member of the Bridge Network at UNB Saint John and sits on the executive committee of Elementary Literacy, a volunteer-based reading program. She was appointed chair of the board of Saint John Energy in 2013 and chairs its audit governance committees.

Rinehart has served on a variety of other volunteer boards and committees including the Saint John Board of Trade (the Chamber), the Cherry Brook Zoo, the New Brunswick Institute of Chartered Accountants Disciplinary Panel, and has served as the chair of Fundy Linen Services Inc., Canadian Mental Health Association (Saint John Branch) and Enterprise Saint John.

In recognition of her activities, Rinehart was twice nominated for the Top 40 under 40 award, named an IT Hero by Industry Canada and the Information Technology Association of Canada, and was recognized by Atlantic Progress Magazine as one of 10 ‘People Powering the New Economy’. She has also received recognition as an outstanding volunteer by the Canadian Mental Health Association and the City of Saint John.

Rinehart says that, “True Growth is more than just about growing the economy. It's about tackling social problems and moving the community forward economically, socially and environmentally.”
