Mathematics puts our world in order.
Mathematics provides the framework for scientific theory in applied, natural and social sciences and the principles underlying economics and business studies. At the University of New Brunswick Saint John you will have the opportunity to study calculus, geometry, algebra, statistics and mathematical theory.
What you'll learn
In your first year you'll take introductory courses in calculus and, if you are pursuing a minor in mathematics, algebra. For students pursuing a major in mathematics, you'll also choose a selection of introductory courses in biology, chemistry, geology or physics.
Upper year studies include specialized courses in geometry, algebra and mathematical modeling, theories and principles. You can declare your major in mathematics at the end of your second year.
You can choose to pursue an interdisciplinary major program in mathematics and economics, which you would apply for at the end of your first year. Upper year studies would include courses in microeconomics, macroeconomics, economic analysis along with specialized mathematics and statistics courses. This program is designed for students planning to pursue graduate studies in either mathematics or economics.
Career choices
A mathematics degree gives you quantitative skills that enable you to process and analyze a variety of numeric-based factors to solve problems. It will prepare you for a career as an actuary, climatologist, cryptographer, financial analyst, market analyst, public opinion researcher, statistician or sports analyst.
Certificate in mathematics for education
Become a mathematics specialist or expand your mathematics knowledge with this certificate designed specifically for current and future teachers. Available to all interested students, it requires the completion of 10 term courses in mathematics including the Education course Teaching Elementary School Mathematics.
