Bachelor of Education (BEd)

More information

If you love to learn our concurrent Bachelor of Education program will help turn your passion into a career in the classroom. Our concurrent BEd degree focuses on elementary school teacher training for kindergarten through grade 5, and includes courses in human development, teaching techniques and education theories.

What you'll learn

Our BEd program is available to students who have completed their first year of studies in the Bachelor of Arts program. Students must apply for admission to the BEd program by the end of January in their
first year at UNB Saint John.

The BEd is a popular program and acceptance is not guaranteed. You will need previous experience working with children, a written statement outlining your personal goals, two character references and grades of B- or higher in your first year of courses. Upon acceptance into the BEd program, you’ll take courses in both programs over the next four years. The BA/BEd program typically takes about five years to complete, earning both a BA and a BEd at graduation.

Some of the courses you will study include: teaching exceptional learners, integrated learning through art, music in the classroom, health promotion and literacy. Students will spend two weeks observing in a New Brunswick classroom and an additional 15 weeks working in a New Brunswick public school classroom as part of the field studies practicum, gaining essential real world teaching experience.

Education @ Work

A BEd degree from UNB Saint John qualifies you for a level 5 teaching certificate in elementary education from the New Brunswick Department of Education. Our students find work both in Canada and around the world.
