Gender Studies

More information

Analyze how we perceive gender roles in literature, politics and society with courses in global gender issues and gender relations and the role of women in literature, science and politics.

Gender, as an analytical concept, has its roots in feminism, so gender studies draw heavily on feminist and pro-feminist scholarship, as well as examines recent developments in areas of masculinity studies and queer studies.

Bachelor of Arts

Gender Studies program is available as a minor option as part of a four-year Bachelor of Arts degree. It is also available as certificate program.

Gender Studies @ Work

Your degree with a minor in gender studies could lead to work as a:

  • human support services coordinator
  • volunteer services administrator
  • affirmative action coordinator
  • family services administrator

What you'll learn

Gender is a fundamental category in the organization of knowledge, social systems, forms of representation and modes of production and consumption.

Critical examination of gender is as relevant to men as to women, in part because it involves the study of how masculinity is shaped.

Students minoring in gender studies will pursue a program that develops critical understanding of gender as a category to analyze and examine social dynamics, cultural expression, and belief systems.

Admission

Admission to the gender studies minor is open to students majoring in any Arts discipline and could be available to students in other faculties as minors become available.  Students must select the minor in consultation with the Gender Studies Coordinator, and this should normally be done at the end of a student's second year of study, at the same time as you might be applying to declare a major.

Students meeting the university’s entry requirements or the requirements for admission as a mature student may be admitted to the Certificate in Gender Studies programme in consultation with the Gender Studies Coordinator.
