Psychology or Sociology students may choose a minor in Criminal Justice, which analyzes the causes and consequences of criminal behaviour and the social history of Canada’s criminal justice
system.
Students who minor in criminal justice will examine the practices and government institutions that uphold social control, deter and mitigate crime, and sanction those who violate laws.
Bachelor of Arts
Criminal justice is available as minor option as part of a four-year Bachelor of Arts degree.
At work
Your degree with a minor in criminal justice could lead to work as a:
- corrections officer
- police officer
- probation and parole officer
- victims service specialist
- court clerk
- community service coordinator
- fish and game warden
- industry security specialist
Course of study
You will study such topics as the history of crime in Canada, crime and criminal behaviour and prisoner management and rehabilitation.
Usually students majoring in sociology or psychology are the ones who apply to the criminal justice minor program.
Students from other disciplines may apply to the minor as long as they meet the program requirements.
Applications to become a criminal justice minor are normally made at the end of your second year of study, at the same time as you might be applying to declare a major.
