German Studies

More information

Twenty-four percent of the European Union speaks German, making it the most widely spoken as a first language. Germany is also an economic centre in Europe and a large economic and political centre in the world. German contributions to Western culture, particularly in the arts, music, industry and technology are foundational in the existence of our civilization as we know it.

Bachelor of Arts

The German Studies program is available as a major, double major or honours option as part of a four-year Bachelor of Arts degree. Arts is a four year program and covers a broad range of subject areas concerned with the study of human beings and the evolution and nature of global societies, ideas, and institutions. In your first two years of the program, you will select courses in fields like humanities, languages, social sciences as well as science and business to provide you with a broad foundation for advanced study in your chosen subject area during the final two years.

German Culture and Literature

Students who are not primarily drawn to German language courses, but who still retain a lively interest in the German contribution to Western civilization, may take one of several literature or culture courses in which texts and instruction are in English, and for which no knowledge of German is required. These courses focus on various writers, movements, and aspects of German literature, culture, or film.
