Economic Studies

More information

Economics is a social science that focuses on the study of the production, distribution and consumption of goods and services.

The Economic Studies Program is for those who want a liberal arts background in economics, as preparation for professional schools (such as Law), or as a useful complement to related disciplines (such as Anthropology, Education, History, Political Science, Psychology or Sociology), or related programs (such as the Law and Society Program).

There is less emphasis in Economic Studies on economic theory, and statistics, and more on policy and applications.

Bachelor of Arts

The Economic Studies program is available as a major, double major or honours option as part of a four-year Bachelor of Arts degree. Arts is a four-year degree that covers a broad range of subject areas concerned with the study of human beings and the evolution and nature of global societies, ideas, and institutions.

In your first two years of Arts, you will select courses in fields like humanities, languages, social sciences as well as science and business to provide you with a broad foundation for advanced study in your chosen subject area during the final two years.

Many Options

  • "A" Major
  • Minor in Public Policy
  • Minor in Culture and Economy

Within the traditional offerings of Major, Minor and Honours, the Economics department offers many different opportunities.

The "A" Major  is for students who wish to specialize in Economics but do not require the depth of the Honours program which is traditionally for students who intend to pursue careers as a professional economist.

The Minor in Public Policy is a joint minor program offered by the economics and political science departments. This minor is open to all students at the University, including economics and political science majors.

The minor in Culture and Economy is a joint minor offered by the economics and anthropology departments. This minor helps students understand social customs and behaviors in terms of costs and benefits.
