Classical Studies offers students the option of studying the ancient civilizations of Greece and Rome with only minimal or no language study.
It is designed for students who wish to study ancient civilizations either as a secondary interest (for example, with History or English) or as preparation for entrance into further professional studies (architecture, education, journalism, law).
Classical Studies is a perfect for those who wish to develop their interest in and knowledge of Ancient Greece and Rome but who do not wish to continue their study of ancient societies into a career or post-graduate study.
Bachelor of Arts
The Classical Studies program is available as a major, minor or honours option as part of a Bachelor of Arts degree. Arts is a four-year degree that covers a broad range of subject areas concerned with the study of human beings and the evolution and nature of global societies, ideas, and institutions.
In your first two years of Arts, you will select courses in fields like humanities, languages, social sciences as well as science and business to provide you with a broad foundation for advanced study in your chosen subject area during the final two years.
Greek and Latin
While the language requirements of the Classical Studies program are less than those in the Classics program, some combinations of language studies are required for the honours option.
This provides a great opportunity for students to further develop their knowledge of ancient cultures and to develop foundational language skills which will further develop their abilities in all facets of reading and writing. For the Major in Classical Studies, students may choose from any Classics courses to fulfill the 30 credit requirement.
