Building a better world

Engineers put energy and materials to work to solve society's problems. They apply the principles of mathematics and science to find practical solutions to technical challenges.

Our graduates have gone on to help design and build bridges, make cleaner fuels and next-generation wireless communications tools. Our tradition of excellence adds up to a solid reputation that you can use to start your career after graduation.

Array of specialties

Many of the different majors share common courses. This means that students can change disciplines in their first year of studies and still gain credit for most of the courses that they have taken.

UNB Saint John and Fredericton offer programs in nine areas of specialization:

  • Chemical engineering - chemical engineers are the people who design, construct and operate the equipment that processes materials into desired products.
  • Civil engineering – civil engineers plan and manage the construction and operation of buildings, utilities and other public and private works.
  • Computer engineering - computer engineers are active in specifying and designing the hardware, software and communication components of computer systems.
  • Electrical engineering - the production, transmission and use of electricity are the concerns of electrical engineers
  • Forest engineering - UNB is the only university in Canada that offers a degree in Forest Engineering. Forest Engineering encompasses forestry, engineering and business.
  • Geomatics engineering - geomatics is the science and technology of gathering, analysing, interpreting, distributing and using geographic information.
  • Geological engineering -  geological engineering is concerned with the exploration, conservation, utilization and management of earth materials and the resources of the earth's crust.
  • Mechanical engineering - mechanical engineers work with systems that transform energy and material to useful ends. They design and direct the construction and operation of alternative and conventional energy systems, material processing plants, and advanced manufacturing systems, including robotics.
  • Software engineering - software engineering is the application of engineering principles to the design of computer software. It is a fusion of computer science and engineering.

Two campuses, many options.

At UNB Saint John, two years' full credit is offered in civil, chemical, computer, electrical, and mechanical engineering. One year's full credit is available in geomatics, geological forest and in software engineering.

When students finish one or two years at UNB Saint John, they transfer to our Fredericton campus to complete the degree requirements.

Some Engineering programs are offered on both campuses while others are only offered in Fredericton. Choose a campus to learn what options are available at each location.
