ENGL3814Literatures of Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa (A)3 ch (3C) [W]
A survey of twentieth- and twenty-first-century writing in English from Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa, with an emphasis on fiction. Literature studied exemplifies themes characteristic of former invader-settler colonies (e.g., land and landscape; home and belonging; relations between settler populations and indigenous peoples; pluralism and multiculturalism; national identity and globalization). Texts are discussed in their historical, cultural, and sociopolitical contexts, and students are introduced to some relevant theoretical concepts.
