ESCI6132Advanced Igneous Petrology3 ch
Examines the application of thermodynamics, kinetics and mechanics to problems in igneous petrology. This course focuses on application of quantitative numerical models to petrologic processes including diffusion, mantle convection, magma generation, collection and transport.
ESCI6141Thermodynamics Applied to Geology3 ch
This course covers the basic applications of thermodynamics to geologic systems from a theoretical and experimental perspective. There is a strong focus on using thermodynamic data and models for such diverse applications as development of mineral – fluid solubility models and geothermobarometry.
ESCI6150Seminars in Mineralogy3 ch
This course focuses on current advances in the mineralogical sciences using a survey of the current literature together with lectures to provide background and assignments and labs that allow practise of the techniques and applications.
ESCI6170Seminar in Petrology3 ch
Focuses on the most recent developments in igneous and metamorphic petrology.
ESCI6181Directed Studies in Petrology3 ch
Students to be assigned a project in Petrology.
ESCI6193Fluid Phase Petrology3 ch
Studies the gas, fluid, and solid phase equilibria, including composition and behaviour of fluids related to the formation of rocks and minerals in a variety of geologic environments from sedimentary diagenetic, through structural-metamorphic to mineral deposit-forming environments and will even include melt inclusion studies. Fluid phase studies are directed at fluid-rock reactions and are usually studied using fluid inclusions trapped in minerals. This course is predominantly a series of lectures and seminars, with individually directed, lab-based fluid inclusion stage, cathodoluminescent analysis, and SEM-EDS studies.

ESCI6510Directed Studies in Geophysics3 ch
Investigation of special topics in geophysics that may vary with student interests and needs. Will typically involve student seminars and a term project.
ESCI6531Geophysical Inverse Theory3 ch
An introduction to the mathematical and computational principles of inversion techniques used to interpret geophysical data. Topics include the mathematical formulation of inverse problems, least squares fitting, handling of data errors, matrix inversion, and methods for imposing constraints and assessing non-uniqueness in inverse problem solutions. Strategies developed for linear inverse problems are expanded upon and applied to non-linear problems in the second part of the course. Principles are illustrated by applications to inverse problems taken from a variety of geophysical disciplines including seismology, signal processing, gravity, electrical resistivity, electromagnetics and other fields.
