Dr. Jack McKenzie Limerick
Pulp and Paper Research and Education Centre

The pulp and paper industry is vital to the economy of Atlantic Canada, and to New Brunswick in particular. Pulp and paper in Atlantic Canada represents 12% of Canada's output, while New Brunswick accounts for 9%. The forest products industry in New Brunswick employs approximately 12,000 persons directly and another 12,000 persons indirectly. To address this need, in September 1991, UNB started a significant effort in pulp and paper research and education with the establishment of the Industrial Research Chair (IRC) in Pulping Technology. This was made possible by funding from Repap Enterprises and the National Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC). In May 1994, the IRC became part of the Dr. Jack McKenzie Limerick Pulp and Paper Research and Education Centre, thanks to Dr. J.M. Limerick, a UNB alumnus and accomplished professional in the pulp and paper industry, who willed his entire estate to the Pulp and Paper Centre.

The Limerick Pulp and Paper Centre is located on the Fredericton campus of the University of New Brunswick. The Centre also provides research and education programs in pulp and paper science for undergraduate and graduate students, encourages the most talented from this region to make their career in the pulp and paper industry, and has become a technical resource and distance education provider for the industry in Atlantic Canada.

Currently, there are many active research projects ongoing at the Centre from a wide range of operations in the pulp and paper industry, including: pulping, bleaching, papermaking and effluent treatment. The Centre's research and development capacity and quality is recognized by the pulp and paper industry.
