25th ANNIVERSARY |
|
The very first entry in the Canadian Internet Handbook's timeline
announces the formation of the New Brunswick/Prince Edward Island
Educational Computer Network in October 1970. Twenty-five years later,
on Oct. 31, 1995, the network's member institutions celebrated its
silver anniversary at the University of New Brunswick in Fredericton.
"This network is a highly successful example of co-operation between postsecondary institutions," said Greg Sprague, actual Director of UNB's Computing Services Department. "It has allowed members to share the region's computer resources as well as regional network resources such as personnel and equipment." "This co-operation has meant a significant cost saving for everyone involved," he added. Network members benefit from sharing the cost of regional connections to the Internet and participating in joint software site licenses. To mark the 25th anniversary, the directors of computing services of the networked 10 member campuses gave a presentation on the educational computer network's past, present and future to the presidents of the member institutions. These institutions are, in New Brunswick, the University of New Brunswick in Fredericton and Saint John; the Université de Moncton in Moncton, Edmundston and Shippagan; St. Thomas University in Fredericton, Mount Allison University in Sackville and Maritime College of Forest Technology in Fredericton. The University of Prince Edward Island in Charlottetown and Holland College in Charlottetown and Summerside are the network's Island members. The network, which is responsible for bringing the Internet to the Atlantic Provinces, operates under the auspices of the Maritime Provinces Higher Education Commission (MPHEC). It is managed by a board of directors consisting of the presidents of the member institutions and the chairperson of the MPHEC.
