The Urban & Community Studies Institute

The Urban & Community Studies Institute (UCSI) is an interfaculty and bi-campus institute located at the University of New Brunswick’s Saint John campus.

UCSI focuses on small and medium-sized cities and their surrounding suburban and rural fringe communities.

Mission

UCSI seeks to understand and contribute to community growth and public policy development, particularly in the area of poverty reduction, in New Brunswick.

UCSI accomplishes this through:

  • research
  • community engagement
  • knowledge dissemination
  • education and academic training

Location

The institute is located in Saint John, a city with a rich urban history which faces critical social, economic and demographic challenges.

This enables the institute’s researchers to work with community partners in order to:

  • explore pressing civil concerns
  • enrich public dialogue on the region’s future
  • identify possible policy solutions to social issues which may be applied in the region or in similar-sized Canadian cities

Members

UCSI draws its membership from faculty members of both UNB campuses, who have a strong interest in urban affairs, as well as from experts in Saint John and across the province.

The institute is led by Dr. Rob Moir and is located in Beaverbrook House in uptown Saint John.
